Error codes

| Code | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| 21E | Freezer fan error (fan frozen or motor failure) |
| 22E, 22C | Fridge fan error, often after the door was left open |
| 5E | Fridge defrost sensor error |
| 8E | Ice maker (freezer) sensor error |
| 14E | Ice maker sensor error |
| 33E | Ice pipe heater error |
| 39E, 39C | Ice maker function error |
| 40E, 40C | Ice room fan error |
| 83E | Compressor abnormal current |
| 84C | Compressor lock |
| 85E | Compressor under-voltage (brown-out) |
| 86E | Compressor over-voltage (power surge) |

What you can check yourself
0 / 4 checked
- For 22E/22C, which often follows a door being left open, unplug the refrigerator and leave both doors open for 2 to 4 hours to let any ice on the evaporator coil fully melt, then plug it back in.
- For ice-maker codes (8E, 14E, 33E, 39E, 40E), check that the water line to the fridge is actually supplying water — a kinked or frozen line can trigger these even when the ice maker itself is fine.
- For compressor codes (83E, 84C, 85E, 86E), check what else is on the same circuit — 85E (under-voltage) and 86E (over-voltage) specifically point to the home's power rather than the fridge.
- Replace the water filter if it's overdue — a badly clogged filter can contribute to several of the ice-related codes.

Book a visitWhen to call a technician
Call a technician for any compressor code (83E, 84C), or for a fan/defrost code that returns after a full manual defrost — at that point the fan motor, defrost heater or a sensor likely needs replacing.
The manual defrost trick, explained
Several Samsung fan and defrost codes happen because ice has built up around the evaporator fan, jamming it — the fan isn't actually broken, it's just physically stuck. A full manual defrost (unplugged, doors open, several hours) melts that ice without needing a part replaced. If the code comes right back after the fridge runs again for a day or two, that points to an actual defrost-system failure worth a technician visit.
A known pattern on French-door ice makers
If your symptoms are specifically about the ice maker freezing up, leaking, or making a lot of noise rather than showing a numbered code, see our dedicated guide on the Samsung French-door ice maker issue — it's a documented pattern on certain models, not a one-off fault.
A note on this brand's codes: Codes vary by model and production year. 88 88 after a power outage usually clears on its own once power stabilizes; if it doesn't, a reset (unplug for a minute) usually resolves it.
