Refrigerator Not Cooling But Freezer Works

  1. Listen for the evaporator fan while the compressor is running
  2. Check the vents between the freezer and fridge compartments aren't blocked by food packages pressed up against them
  3. Do a manual defrost: unplug the fridge, leave both doors open for several hours, then restart
  4. Check the door seals on the fridge side for gaps

Call a technician if the problem returns within a day or two of a manual defrost

Repair or replace?

As a rough guide, a repair under roughly half the cost of a comparable new unit is usually worth it, especially on a fridge under 8 to 10 years old. Once the compressor or sealed system is involved, or the refrigerator is well past that age, replacement often makes more financial sense. Your technician gives you a straight answer after diagnosis, not a sales pitch.

Maintenance tips

  • Vacuum or brush the condenser coils (usually behind or underneath the unit) twice a year — dust buildup makes the compressor work harder.
  • Replace the water filter on the schedule in your owner's manual, usually every 6 months, to protect the ice maker and dispenser.
  • Check door gaskets for a tight seal; a worn gasket lets warm air in and drives up energy use.
  • Keep the fridge a few inches from the wall for airflow, and don't block interior vents with food.

A local note

Southern California's hard water builds mineral scale in ice-maker fill valves and water filters faster than it would somewhere with softer water — worth knowing if your ice maker is slowing down rather than fully failing. Garage refrigerators also run harder through Valley and Inland summer heat, since the compressor works against a hotter ambient temperature.

FAQ

Questions people ask before booking.

Still unsure? Call or text and we'll tell you straight.

(424) 296-8985

How much does a refrigerator service call cost?

The diagnostic visit is $89. If you approve the repair, that amount comes off the final bill. You'll see the full quote before any work starts.

Can you really come the same day?

Most days, yes. Calls that come in before noon on weekdays are usually seen the same afternoon. A warm fridge means food spoiling, so tell us it's a refrigerator when you call and we'll move you up.

Is it worth repairing my refrigerator, or should I replace it?

We'll tell you straight. As a rule, if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit and the fridge is over 10 years old, replacing usually makes more sense. High-end built-ins are almost always worth repairing.

What does the warranty cover?

Our labor is guaranteed for 90 days: if the same problem comes back in that window, we come back at no charge. Parts we install carry a 1-year warranty against failures not caused by the customer.

Do you repair built-in and commercial refrigerators?

Yes. We service Sub-Zero, Viking and Thermador built-ins, plus walk-in coolers, reach-in coolers and ice machines for restaurants, markets and offices.

¿Hablan español?

Sí. Llámenos o envíenos un mensaje de texto y le atenderemos en español.

What brands do you see the most refrigerator error codes on?

Samsung and LG are two of the most common brands we service, and both show on-display error codes rather than just warning lights. See our Samsung and LG refrigerator error code pages for what each code usually means — codes still vary by exact model.

My refrigerator is still under manufacturer warranty — should I call you or the manufacturer?

If it's still within the original manufacturer warranty window, start with the manufacturer since the repair may be free. We're a good option once that coverage has run out, or for anything the manufacturer warranty doesn't cover.
